David Leadbetter Golf Academy (DLGA) alumnus, Paula Creamer, claimed victory at the 2007 SBS Open at Turtle Bay the first LPGA event of the year. DLGA alum Julieta Granada finished second at the event.
Collecting her first win since the Evian Masters in 2005, Creamer held on for a one stroke victory over Granada. Battling windy conditions Creamer carded a final round 70 for a final score of 207. This was her first LPGA tournament win since her 2005 Rookie of the Year campaign. In 2006, she recorded 14 Top Ten finishes.
As a LPGA Tour rookie in 2006, Granada broke Creamer's rookie prize money record set the previous year, with over $1.6 million in winnings including the $1,000,000 purse for her victory at the ADT Championships.
“It is great to see two young players start their season off so well,” stated DLGA Director and Paula's coach David Whelan. “Paula worked very hard in the off-season to get back on top of the podium. To see it happen in the first event of the year is a very gratifying experience. Julieta is doing a great job building off the momentum created after winning the ADT Championships last season.”
Longtime David Leadbetter student Charles Howell III also won this weekend defeating Phil Mickelson in a three-hole playoff at the Nissan Open for his first win since 2002.
