John Riek, a post-graduate at The Basketball Academy at IMG Academy, has committed to continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Cincinnati. Riek, a 7-2 center, made the verbal pledge over the weekend during an unofficial visit to the Bearcat campus.
Riek had spent the second part of the 2007-08 season at IMGA and did his spring workouts with The Pro Training Center at IMGA pre-draft group. During his time at IMGA, Riek, who is originally from the Sudan, spent much of his time in English language intensive classroom sessions when he was away from the court.
It was discovered in early June that Riek had been playing with a detached ACL in his knee. Despite the injury, Riek had, in the words of IMGA Basketball Academy coach Dan Barto, “dominated the other high major centers in our program. Though not as gifted offensively, John’s aggressiveness and tenacity combined with his unmatched wingspan clearly separated him and the way he affects the game.”
Barto continued, “He is a staple on our campus. His engaging smile and courteousness toward people involved in his development is refreshing. We talk about ‘being a pro,’ and John typifies that in the way he has handled his business here at IMGA.”
Riek, who will need to successfully complete the SAT prior to starting at Cincinnati, will enroll in September or December, depending on eligibility requirements.
“We are excited for him and wish him nothing but the best,” stated Barto.
