The Kathy Whitworth Invitational, now in its 11th year, is considered among the top events in girls golf. Past champions of the event include some of the most promising players in women's golf: Paula Creamer, Christina Kim, Jane Park, Brittany Lang and Kristen Park.
The 36-hole stroke-play tournament was played this past Monday and Tuesday (March 16 and 17) at Mira Vista Golf Club in Fort Worth. David Leadbetter Golf Academy student, Sally Watson, finished in 3rd place with a two-under par 142 total.
The 72-player field included players from 18 states and seven foreign countries (Bolivia, Canada, Israel, Northern Ireland, Philippines, Scotland and Thailand). Seven academy girls traveled to compete with six of them finishing in the Top 20. Christina Miller finished in 9th place and fellow DLGA students Tanaporn Kongkiatkria and Laetitia Beck finshed in a tie for 16th. Mia Piccio and Susana Benavides rounded out a top 20 finish with a two day total of 152.
The tournament was established in 1999 to give girls the opportunity to take part in a high-level event on a premier course. The tournament's namesake, Kathy Whitworth, compiled 88 career wins, a record for men's or women's U.S. tours. She won six majors and was seven times named LPGA Player of the Year.
