Aftter suffering an unfortunate 3-1 loss to FC Dallas in the first match, the U-19 boys rebounded to defeat US Youth Soccer Europe 7-1.
Coach Durkin stressed the importance of scoring goals this match due to the event of a tiebreaker later in the tournament. Goals were vital to the life of the team, and they did not take this game lightly.
A quick start off the ball put USYSE on their heels. Back from injury, Luis Calzadilla was relentless, pressuring every ball and fighting like it was the last game he would ever play. Fresh legs were the key, and it made all the difference.
After entering halftime 2-0, the boys kept their foot on the pedal. Strategic offensive subs by Tom Durkin aided the attack, as Martin Ontiveros, Alex Walters and Miguel Medina raised the level of play in favor of IMG. Quick offensive strikes were easily mounted. Two goals by Calzadilla and Matteo Vertucci secured the win, with additional goals by Luis Ocejo and Alex Walters.
With one win and one loss, a variety of situations must happen for IMG to advance -- starting with a win tomorrow vs. Toronto Lynx in the final match of group play. It's all or nothing. The talent is there, the will to win is present and the opportunity for success in wide open. Once the sun rises and the new day begins, it's anybody game.
