Spartanburg native Mallory Cecil was named MVP of the women’s ACC tennis tournament Sunday after leading the Blue Devils to their first conference title since 2003.
Cecil, ranked 16th nationally among collegians, upset fourth-ranked Julia Cohen of Miami 6-4, 6-1 in Sunday’s No. 1 singles match. She also teamed with Jessi Robinson to win the No. 2 doubles as Duke defeated Miami, 4-3, for the championship.
Cecil departed Spartanburg to train the past several years at the prestigious Nick Bollettieri Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The highly-regarded recruit began attending Duke in January and quickly rose through the ranks.
The 18-year-old was earlier named the ACC freshman of the year. She compiled a 22-3 record (20-1 at No. 1 singles) and twice defeated the nation’s top-ranked player, including Clemson’s Ani Mijacika.
