Pitching and defense wins ballgames, or at least that is what they say. One team always has to come away with a loss and despite great pitching efforts from the IMG Mustangs, they fell to the Lightning, 3-2.
The Mustangs were able to get on the board in each of the first two innings, but were then shutout over the next six innings. In the first, Mustang starting pitcher Bobby Hughes helped himself out by knocking a two-out, RBI double to left field to start the scoring.
Hughes also had a very solid outing on the hill, going four shutout innings, striking out two, while just allowing two hits.
In the second, Evan Garfinkle reach first on a walk, stole second, and was knocked in on a double by teammate, Dan Segal. However, the Mustangs would leave the bases loaded in the inning.
Zach Jacobs took over on the mound for the Lightning in the third inning, and he was phenomenal. Jacobs tossed six innings of shutout baseball striking out four and allowing only three hits.
The Lightning threatened to score often, as they had a runner reach base in every inning and stranded ten in the game, but could never get the timely hit until the late innings. They finally got on the board in the sixth, when Jeff Mazzamurro scored on an overthrow on a play at third base. The error seemed to rattle the Mustangs, as Anthony Hajjar then reached on a single, and Cal Lambert knocked him in with a double to deep left field.
Each team threatened in the seventh, but failed to get a runner across home plate. The Mustangs had a runner on third with two outs when Josh Cooper was robbed of a hit on a great defensive snag by Mazzamurro at short stop. The Lightning had a runner on with just one out, but that rally was halted when the runner was caught in a failed bunt-and-run play.
Andrew Brewster led off the bottom of the eighth with a single for the Lightning. He was then lifted for pinch runner, Dan Fellman, who moved to second on a sac bunt by Mazzamurro. After another walk, Hajjar came up and ripped a first-pitch single to left which allowed Fellman to score uncontested.
Hajjar went 3-4 for the game with three singles, a run scored, and the game-winning RBI.
