Despite a late night that filled the sky with rain, thunder, and lightning, the IMG Wood Bat League was able to get on the field thanks to the hard work and diligence of the dedicated field crew. The Lightning played host to the Seadogs in yesterday's featured matchup.
The Sea Dogs, led by Jonathon Davis, were able to capitalize on Lightning mistakes and run all over the base paths, on their way to their sixth victory of the season, 7-5. Davis, hitting out of the leadoff spot, went 3-3 with three singles, two runs scored, and four stolen bases.
The Sea Dogs immediately were able to take advantage of some Lightning mishaps. Davis and Corey Wiley both got on with back-to-back singles and both advanced with a coupled with a couple of steals. After a pass ball, an error, and a bases-loaded balk, the Sea Dogs were all of the sudden up by three runs in the top of the first.
The Lightning kept trying to chip away at the lead, but could not get any consistent offense going. They scored a single run in the second, third, and fourth, but also left three runners in scoring position during that time.
The Lightning showed their fondness for small ball when they were scoring. In the second, Zach Jacobs singled, stole second, and scored on a Blair DeBart single. They had a mini-rally in the third inning after three consecutive singles produced a run, the RBI coming off the bat of Cal Lambert.
Jacobs started it again in the fourth when he reached on a bunt single and reached second on an inaccurate throw to first by the Sea Dogs pitcher. DeBart moved Jacobs over to third on a sacrifice bunt, and Daniel Fellman drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Sea Dogs, however, had an answer for each of the Lightning threats. In the sixth, with the score 4-3, the Dogs were able to put up a couple of runs to add some cushion to the lead. A high throw by the Lightning short stop allowed both Jake Weilheimer and Joey Letchinger to score on the play. They added one more run in the seventh and extend the lead to 7-3.
The Lightning showed flares of a comeback in the seventh, but would come up short. With runners on first and second with no outs, Jake Busiek hit one deep into the hole at short that would have definitely scored a run. Davis ran to his right, outstretched his body in a dive, gobbled up the ball, popped up and threw to third for the force in an outstanding play that dampened the comeback hopes of the Lightning. The Lightning were able to put up two runs in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Sea Dogs won, 7-5.
Sea Dogs starter, Sam Burr, had a very solid outing earning the victory. Burr went five innings, allowing just three runs while striking out four.
