In one of the most exciting games of the season, the Conquistadors were able to hold on for the win after a scary seventh inning. The game was in their hands early, but it nearly slipped away as the Hurricanes kept chipping away, but eventually left 7-6 winners.
The Conquistadors second inning rally started the scoring as they sent ten batters to the plate and pushed across five runs. The scoring got started when Michael Suchy hit an RBI double to score Scott Quinlan who reached after getting hit by a pitch. Suchy moved to third on a deep fly ball to centerfield, and catcher Dustin Sandberg reached after a pitch grazed hit jersey. The Conquistadors played a little small ball with runners on the corners and one out as third baseman, Dalton Mellot, dropped down a bunt down the first base line for a successful suicide squeeze. They then displayed some two-out magic as Frankie Bergonzi hit an RBI single, Dusty Tatum reached on a walk, and Shay Mlakar continued his hot hitting as he roped a double to knock the both of them in.
Mlakar has started the summer off on a tear hitting .560, with four doubles, two triples and eight runs scored in ten games.
Conquistadors pitcher, Cooper Smith, cruised through the first four innings, facing only 14 batters, two over the minimum, including having a four pitch second inning. Smith, however, got into some trouble in the fifth. Hurricanes catcher, Ryan Swinney, led off the inning with a double, and immediately scored on a single by Sawyer Wilson. After an Alex Curtis single, Smith was relieved, but to no avail. The Hurricanes took advantage of two consecutive walks, followed by a bases loaded HBP to finish the fifth inning scoring. The Hurricanes would pick up one more run in the sixth when Swinney hit his second double of the game to knock in third baseman, Gabriel Lowerre.
The Conquistadors were able to answer back in the bottom half of the six. Scott Quinlan led off the inning with a triple, and scored on another double by Suchy. Sandberg then came up with a single to right, which allowed Suchy to cross the plate. The Conquistadors led 7-4 heading into the seventh inning.
The Hurricanes loaded the bases with no outs following two walks and an error. Pat Hodgson was able to work a full count and drew the walk, picking up an RBI. After a pop out to the first baseman, Lowerre came up and ripped a single to right. Nick Castellano scored on the single, but with a great toss from rightfield, Quinlan was able to gun down Nick Mace at the plate, leaving the Conquistadors with a one run lead with two outs in the seventh.
Suchy then struck out the final batter of the game with a great fastball on outside part of the plate. The Conquistadors were able to hold on for the rollercoaster win, 7-6.
Both teams will return to action on Thursday as the Conquistadors will try to make it three straight win against the Ospreys. The Hurricanes will look to get back into the 'W' column as they will take on the Mustangs. Both games will be played at 10:15am.
