IMGWBL - Hurricanes are the Champs!

Cas Dean pitched a complete game shutout to capture the IMG Wood Bat League Championship.

If there is a blueprint for how a championship game should be played, this one sure would have followed it. The Hurricanes were able to live up to their number one seeding and took the Ospreys, 3-0 to win the IMG Wood Bat League Championship.

This Saturday's matinee was a pitcher's duel with both pitchers completely shutting down each lineup. Osprey's starter, Jesus Sanchez, had everything in his arsenal working as he carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Cas Dean, of the Hurricanes, was just about able to match him as he only allowed two hits until that point, and only four for the entire game.

There was nothing but pitching and defense until the fifth inning, when the Hurricanes finally ended Sanchez's no-hit bid, and put some runs up on the board. Sawyer Wilson was able to bloop a single to center that popped in-and-out of the diving Ryan Brenner's glove. It was a spectacular effort to even get to the softly hit ball, but the ball came loose upon the crash landing. After the single, Bret Spradley walked and Alex Curtis laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. However, the throw to first ended up down the right field line and Wilson came around to score the first run of the ballgame. With runners on then on second and third, Dean came up and helped his own cause by ripping a double down the left field line, scoring both Spradley and Curtis, and put the Hurricanes up 3-0.

Dean was hitting his spots all game long, mixing in fastballs and curveballs, to keep the speedy Ospreys lineup off the base paths. He had some good defense behind him, especially from short stop, Nick Mace, who made several great plays in the hole.

Dean pitched went the whole way for the Hurricanes on 94 pitches. He allowed just four hits and struck out four. After his pitching performance and his two-RBI double, there is no doubt he was the game's MVP.

Both teams showed great pitching and defense, exactly what championship caliber teams should display. This was without a doubt the game of the year!

Congratulations to the Hurricanes and coach Steve Frey for being to 2009 IMG Wood Bat League Champions!
