U-16 boys start season with pair of CDL wins

Consisting of some of Florida's elite soccer clubs, the Club Directors League matches IMG Academy soccer program boys' and girls' teams against top competition.

U-16 boys

IMG 2, HC United 0

Unable to find the net in the first half, IMG switched the lineup to include Marshall Glover and Gabriel Nunez playing up front. Marshall scored the first goal of the game with a pass from James Pendrigh. The second goal was scored by Gabriel off of a rebound in the box. Everybody got playing time, and each person contributed to the win. A good result for our first game.

IMG 1 FC Sarasota 0

The Sarasota team was very organized and very strong, but IMG played well and created a lot of chances. IMG again capitalized in the second half, when Gabriel Nunez scored on a free kick. Spencer Moeller and James Pendrigh had great chances to score, but the Sarasota keeper came up big.

IMG 2, HC United 3

The IMG U-15s opened the season versus HCU at Academy Park in a very entertaining first match of the CDL season. HCU opened the scoring in the first half off a set piece and held the lead going into half-time.

IMG started the second half fast, with good attacking movements, led by Pablo Aguilar and were able to tie the game at 1-1 with a Gianluca Carbone goal. Aguilar pushed the attack forward off of the dribble and put Carbone in on goal. Gianluca's composure and goal scoring touch were put on display as he swiftly beat the goalkeeper on his first touch and tied the match with his second. A lapse in defensive discipline allowed HCU to take a 1-2 lead off of a long throw-in. The game opened up as IMG worked hard to find the tying goal, with good attacking movements from Gianluca Carbone, Pablo Aguilar, Will Smith and Jeronimo Mata. The goal came with ten minutes remaining in the game off of a Will Smith finish.

With only minutes remaining, HCU scored the eventual game-winner on a set piece from the corner.

IMG 2 FC Sarasota 3

With two games in as many days, IMG depended on the non-starters to give the team the necessary boost of energy.

Craig Foley, a true U14, entered the game in the first half and provided exactly what the team needed: high energy, an aggressive attacking mentality and the first goal of the match. Foley got free just outside the box and set the ball to shoot, striking the ball to the far post and giving IMG a 1-0 lead.

With very little urgency throughout the match, IMG was unable to close the game and went into half-time with a 1-0 lead. FC Sarasota added two goals within five minutes, taking a 1-2 lead. Substitute Andres Pena Blade scored with 15 minutes remaining, tying the game 2-2 and almost added another minutes later, but the ball barely went over the crossbar. IMG again lacked the proper intensity and urgency to close the match, giving up a goal off of a corner kick late in the match. Paul Sime and Pablo Aguilar nearly pulled IMG back, but barely missed wide on two attempts and hit the far post on another.

IMG will use these matches to prepare for their upcoming match against Strictly Soccer on Wednesday.

U-19 boys

IMG 0, HC United 2

The first half was well played and an even game. IMG and HCU played with the ball on the ground, connecting passes and creating some chances. The first half finished 1-0 in favor of HCU. It was a good half for both keepers. The second half was total different. IMG started to feel the effects of the first game of the season. The legs were not responding, the passing was not working, and game fitness was not there yet. This was the reason that HC United scored the second goal. IMG reacted by putting some pressure on the defense but everything was controlled by HCU's defense.

For the first game of the season, you could see a big difference between IMG and HCU. We need to keep working and the team will be come together. Good game for Toni Liebel in goal, Miguel Manella, Brandon Pattern and Ryan Foss Skiftesvik.

IMG 1, FC Sarasota 0

The second game in 2 days was a big concern in how IMG would respond mentally and physically. It was a great team effort by all. IMG played a very good game overall. The defense did a great job of controlling FC Sarasota, the team played compact when we did not have the ball and when we did have the ball we played good soccer connecting passes, moving the ball well and creating a lot of goal opportunities. The first half finished 1-0 for IMG. Brandon Pattern scored on a PK before the first half was over. FC Sarasota had a chance to tie the game but Nicholas Gilbert came up with a big save and stopped a PK to keep the 1-0 lead.

The second half was a total team effort. IMG played down 2 men (2 red cards) for the last 25 minutes of the game. Defensively it was a perfect game, not giving FC Sarasota a chance to tie the game. Nicholas Gilbert played a perfect game. Tyler Rice, Ambry Moss, Alberto Pedrazza, Brandon Pattern, Daniel Gonzalez, Nazar Zhdan, Ryan Foss Skiftesvik, Breno Moriera, Michael Brunson, Nate Taylor, Felipe Picado, Andri Protsiuk, Diego Rodriguez and Carmelo Duenes all played a big part on the game, they showed a lot of character. 11v 9 is not an easy task and you need to be a team to win games like this one. We need to keep working, we need to get better but a good start to the year.
