In the months leading up to the NFL combine, several collegiate football players will spend time at the Athletic & Personal Development program preparing themselves for the rigors and pressure of the combine, which will help determine how high or low a player goes in the NFL Draft. Here's one of the players:
Coming from a family of four sisters, Rodger Saffold is a patient yet tenacious individual who was shaped by different traits from each of his family members. On his way to the combine, Saffold will have to use his well-rounded persona along with his athletic gifts to earn his spot in the NFL. We sat down with Rodger to learn about his eclectic personality and what he envisions for his future.
Working together at IMG...
"We know that everybody is trying to get to the highest position they can, but we're all basically still thinking that we want to get in the door and then let our ability show. What we do with a lot of guys is try to lift them up and try to make sure that every workout is lively. When people get tired I kind of turn into a clown sometimes and try to get the energy back up. We have a whole bunch of different personalities here and there are always new thing to experience, so when you come here with players from all over the place, you're really able to test not only your physical abilities, but your communication skills as well."
Flipping his switch...
"I'm a nice guy off the field, but I have a whole different persona on the field. I'm very rough, I feel that I have a swagger about myself. If I do something good, I feel good, I'm gonna show it. I don't do a lot of talking, but I love putting people in the ground and that requires a certain intensity."
"I get my smarts from my mom, she's an English teacher. My dad probably wouldn't like hearing that but its the truth. I have four sisters, two younger and two older. It's like I have different attributes of each of my sisters:
Toughness--both me and my younger sister Jessica.
Smarts-- me and my older sister Melanie, she's super smart, and I feel that I'm smart as well especially when it comes to numbers.
Creativity-- came from my older sister, who can cook anything and create anything.
Relaxed/ poised side-- comes from my sister Jasmine, that's where the swagger came from.
It's a little bit of everything, I don't know if its just from being around them, but I've taken on bits from all of their personalities."
Life outside of football...
"I want to get into whatever I can put my hands on, continue to work with non-profit organizations as I do now. I've worked with Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, done a couple things with the Boys & Girls Club, and other little things around Bloomington (IN). I did those things because I wanted to do them, even though it gets harder with a busier schedule, you still have to find the time to do those extra things."
