The fifth starting spot for the Philadelphia Phillies remains open with numerous guys looking to fill it. Kyle Kendrick is among the group looking to slip in there, along with 23-year veteran and IMG client Jamie Moyer (. "Kyle got here real fast," Dubee said. "It's easy to get into the big leagues; it's hard to stay in the big leagues. That's what Kyle experienced. Again, give him credit. He took a lot of beating down last year about having to become a full-repertoire pitcher. He went to IMG [Academies in Bradenton, Fla.> this off-season and got himself in great shape. He has an understanding of what he needs to do to stay in the big leagues now."
In the last year, Kendrick has added a cutter and slider while refining his change-up - all to add to the sinker that got him to the majors and helped him win 21 games in 2007 and 2008. Yesterday, Manuel said Kendrick has a "major-league slider." This spring, Kendrick is also workout partners with new ace Roy Halladay.
"Things are a lot different this year than the last couple of years," Kendrick said.
So is the message from Dubee, which was relayed to Kendrick shortly thereafter.
"I'm excited," Kendrick said. "That's good to hear."
