In the first two weeks of February IMG Tennis took 16 players over two weeks to tournaments in Mexico City and Guadalajara to compete in Grade 4 ITF events.
The first week was Mexico City at the Casablanca club where the top showing was a quarterfinal effort by Xue Zhang and runner up in boys doubles with Trey Stroebel teaming with John Harrison Richmond.
The second week brought out the best in our players sweeping the boys and girls doubles with Joseph Van Dooren teaming with John Harrison Richmond this week to capture the boys doubles title and Emma Onila and Barbara Lasarova teaming to beat Xue Zhang and her partner Giovanna Manifacio, this was Emma and Barbara's second ITF title together after winning the IBM/ITF Junior Open in Trinidad over the summer.
In singles play Joseph Van Dooren reached the quarterfinals before losing to Mac Styslinger. Mac lost in the semifinals to the eventual tournament champion in a very exciting three setter with Mac holding two match points before falling in three. In girls singles Emma Onila was eliminated in the semifinals by the same player who eliminated Xue Zhang in the quarterfinals, Giovanna Manifacio, the tournament champion.
These players were subjected to very different playing conditions playing at 7300 feet above sea level in the first week on hard courts and red clay at 5000 feet above in the second week using pressureless balls, so keeping your cool and being able to adjust at all times was crucial.
In other good results Naomi Totka earned her first ITF points in Mexico City after winning two rounds and losing in the round of 16.
The traveling coaches for this tournament were Aurelio Andrade and Dusty Owen.
