Marqus Blakely and Mikhail Torrance recently came to IMG Academy looking to improve their stock for the June 24 NBA Draft.
After their first stop at the Portsmouth Invitational, both are well on their way.
Bleacher Report put Torrance, a senior combo guard from Alabama, on its All-Tournament team, stating:
Torrance proved all week that he might be the second best point guard in this class, behind only John Wall. We wouldn't be surprised if he came off the board anytime from the mid-20s all the way into the middle of the second round.
Torrance still needs to cut down on his turnovers and become more effective going to his right. Even with that said, all the tools are there and whatever team takes him may have the steal of the draft.
Blakely, a senior forward from Vermont, helped his team to a 3-0 record and a Portsmouth title. Stated DraftExpress after Day 2 of competition:
Marqus Blakely may not have put up eye-popping statistics (6 points, 8 rebounds, 19 minutes) in his team's blowout 90-56 victory, but he provided quite a bit of intrigue in a very dull game, showing some of the best physical tools of any of the players in attendance. Blakely is a chiseled 6-6 athlete who competes on every possession, crashes the glass hard and has terrific potential on the defensive end. His perimeter skills appear to be a serious work in progress, but he seems to be a smart and unselfish player who is still very far from being a finished product at this point in time. If anything, Blakely got his name written into the notebooks of a couple of NBA scouts who previously weren't familiar with him, and possibly earned himself a couple more workouts in the process. We'll keep watching him as the week moves on.
Both Blakely and Torrance, as well as other pre-draft trainees, will work out at IMG Academy in the upcoming months. Last year, pre-draft trainees included Jrue Holiday, Earl Clark, DeJuan Blair, Nick Calathes, Robert Dozier, Ahmad Nivins -- all of whom were drafted -- and many others.
