IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program student Tammy Hendler won her first round match in Charlottesville at the Boyd Tinsley, after making it to the main draw as a "lucky loser". Hendler fought off a stomach virus while battling 180-ranked Carly Gullikson, coming out on top 6-2, 6-3. The Daily Progress had more on Hendler's fight and other upsets at the Tinsley:
On Wednesday at the Boar's Head Sports Club, the 573rd-ranked Hendler took full advantage of the reprieve, shocking 180th-ranked Carly Gullickson, 6-2, 6-3.
The final game, which featured a number of long rallies and over a dozen deuces, was by far the best of the match. Hendler, who is taking antibiotics for the virus, fought off numerous breaks before finally converting on her seventh match point.
"That was a crazy game, geez," said Hendler, smiling. "It went on for so long. I just tried to have effective first serves and hang in there and fight hard. I really wanted to win that match really bad. I just dug deep to finish it out."
