Once the clock struck 7:00pm ET. time last night on June 24, 2010, there weren't many surprises. Most of the first 5 picks where foreseen through tedious statistical computer and physical analysis.
No surprises there but what was a surprise is that throughout the day leading up to the draft Larry Sanders of VCU witnessed his draft stock rise. He was first predicted to go 1st round # 26, then it rose to #25, it jumped to #21 and then went to #20. Most likely extremely satisfied to climb the ranks he must have been elated when Commissioner of NBA David Stern announced the 15th pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks was him.
Sanders adds a long athletic body with an intimidating presence and shot blocking ability. The Bucks under Scott Skiles where 2nd in defensive rating in the 09-10 season and with the addition of Sanders that is sure to rise. The Bucks look to be have more teeth with Brandon Jennings at the helm the 10th overall pick of 2009 draft and the newly acquired Sanders. IMG Academy basketball program Coach Dan Barto and Athletic & Personal Development program knew they had a gem of an athlete; a rare breed. Countless hours of drills, shoot selection training, power moves and more has made Sanders a real threat that any opponent in the NBA must account for in their pre-game strategy.
Another surprise with the 2010 NBA Draft was the stock of Derrick Caracter, his rose as well. Formerly resting comfortably on the Mock Draft at 2nd round # 59 , to being totally removed from it leading into the actual draft while finishing the night out being drafted by NBA Champs The Los Angeles Lakers at # 58.
Caracter is going to add another big body to the already enormous presence that the Laker bigs possess. Not to mention they have the best player in the league right now but Gasol, Bynum and Odom are all bigger than 6"10. Now they acquire a tank of a man 6"9 with the weight and strength to move and get position on just about anyone in the league. At IMG Caracter focused on keeping his mind right and character in check among other things and obviously it paid off.
When there is positive surprise there is also shock. The shock of Mikhail Torrance not being drafted. For whatever reason NBA teams didn't feel the need to capture this young star. Mock Drafts every where had Mikhail going 2nd round between 40 and 50. His stats and skill spoke for themselves, but something was missing. Most likely he will get invitations to workout for teams and participate in NBA Summer Leagues.
