The AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions has reached the halfway point and the cut has been made. The to the top 24 Girls and the top 32 boys will continue to battle it out over the next two days at what has turned out to be a very tough and demanding Blessings Golf Club layout.
IMG Golfer and defending champion Victoria Tanco wowed everyone today with an amazing move up the leaderboard. Victoria, who shot a season-worst 83 in the opening round Tuesday, rebounded with a bogey-free, 6-under 66 to get within three strokes of the lead. Victoria's 66 was easily the best 18-hole score in the girls division through two rounds at Blessings Golf Club, and it vaulted her from a tie for 41st to T-4. The scoring average on Day 2 was 80.6.
Starting on the back nine this morning, Victoria turned with a 3-under 32, then made three straight birdies on Nos. 3-5 to move to 5 over for the event. She made a great par-3 on the eighth, after her tee came up short of the green with a difficult lie, however, made a very impressive up and down after sticking her approach to within 6 inches of the pin.
Fellow IMG'er, Sammi Stevens was sound asleep early Sunday morning when the phone rang. As it turned out it was no ordinary call; it was from AJGA Senior Tournament Director Jeremy Freyman, offering her a chance to play at the Rolex Tournament of Champions. Sammy hopped on the next plane to Arkansas and since then has taken advantage of the opportunity to play at the Tournament of Champions.
Sammi sits in 4th place tied with Victoria at 149 and three shots back of the lead.
Doris Chen and Jordan Lippetz missed the 2 day cut by a shot.
In the boys division, all Four IMG entrants are still in the hunt. Shugo Imahira, Sean Kelly, Emiliano Grillo and Cyril Suk all survived the 36 hole cut. After 2 days Shugo finds himself in 13th place after firing rounds of 74-75. Sean Kelly and Emiliano are both tied for 23rd at 152 and Cyril Suk found himself making the cut on the number at 155.
Good luck to you all over the next two days!
