The IMG Wood Bat League started early this morning with two 10:15A.M starts. Despite overcast conditions, all four teams in action played great baseball competing hard at every position. The Lightning played the Hurricanes while the Marauders faced off against the Manatees. I was able to cover a nail biting game between the Marauders and the Manatees that went down to the wire.
The Manatees were up to bat first in today's contest and they got on the board early. Although pitching from Alan Nagihian was strong for the Marauders, the Manatees managed a run before a player was thrown out at home to close out the at bat. The Marauders also got on the board in the first scoring two runs. Mike Roberts was throwing his best stuff but the hitters for the Manatees were making great contact with the bats today.
The bats silenced in the next couple innings as only one run was scored between the two teams until the fourth. Taking a 3-1 lead into the fourth, the Marauders defense were confident and quick until the Manatees found their rhythm from the plate. With the bases loaded, the Manatees hit a double down the first base line bringing two runs in and tying the game. The Marauders also put a run on the board in the fourth when Jorge Delrincon doubled. At the end of the fourth it was the Mauraders 4 and the Manatees 3.
Sy Cohen started the fifth inning pitching for the Marauders as he let no runs score and finished the inning off with a strike out. The same could not be said for Brooks Austin as he arrived to the mound for the Manatees. One run was scored off a wild throw to first that extended the lead 5-3 for the Marauders.
The sixth inning was a rough one for the Marauders as the bases loaded quickly and three runs scored for the Manatees putting them up 6-5. Pitching took over from there as both pitchers were unbeatable. Strikeouts, double plays, and amazing dive catches took place on both teams as defense took over until the ninth inning.
The Manatees started the ninth with a 6-5 lead, but due to great pitching and defense, could not put another run on the board. They were forced to rely on their own pitching to close out the game. With the bases loaded late into the inning, the Marauders doubled to right field to score two runs and win the game over the Manatees 7-6.
