IMG Academy Leadbetter golf program's Cheng-Tsung Pan leads after round 1 at the 104th Southern Amateur at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, AL.
Pan leads all golfers after a 7-under-par 65 on Thursday.
He has a one-shot lead over Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, Calif., and is two ahead of IMG Alumni Richard Lamb of South Bend, Ind.
Pan, 18, is from Miaoli, Taiwan, but has lived in the U.S. for three years studyÂing and playing golf here at IMG. He is entering his senior year and has committed to play for the University of Washington in the fall of 2011.
He played the four par-5s three under and eagled on No. 17. With birdies on Nos. 1, 2 and 15 against a lone bogey on No. 4, it all added up to 65.
According to the Birmingham Post, Pan is quoted as saying, "I hit basically every fairÂway and the greens are soft so I fired at nearly every pin. I stiffed it many times and putted well, too. I tried to make birdie on every hole."
Pan has had a solid summer with top 10 finishes at the Sunnehanna, Monroe and Northeast Amateurs. He won the stroke play part of the Western Amateur last year and made it to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur in 2008.
Leadbetter Alum, Rich Lamb, 19, plays at Santa Clara. He was named West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year for 2010 and won the Indiana Junior Amateur in 2008.
Play continues through Saturday, with the field to be cut to the low 66 and ties after the second round.
