The U.S. Girls Junior is underway this week at the Dogwod course at the The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, NC. The course with its narrow fairways and fast greens are set up at a lengthy 6,395 yards and is playing to a par 72.
Full Time Leadbetter Golfer, Ginger Howard, is off to a great start at the Country Club of North Carolina after the first two day of stroke play. Robbi, Gingers younger sister and also a full timer at IMG, is on the bag this week. Ginger likes the Dogwood course set up and is feeling comfortable on the course as she won the Trusted Choice Big âIâ in 2008. It set up a good vibe for Ginger, especially as she closed her second round with birdies at Nos. 8 and 9 (she started on 10) to get to even par for the day and 2 under for the tournament. Ginger finished the stroke play portion yesterday in the runner-up position a stroke behind medalist Danielle Kang.
Victoria Tanco qualified in the 25th position after rounds of 80-73. She struggled on her back nine on day 1 after missing a few putts and hitting a few errant shots. She let her anger get the best of her. She bounced back on Tuesday like a true champion fire a 1-over par 73 to make the top 64 match play field.
Also qualifying was Jordan Lippetz who finished the stroke play portion in 35th. Jordan, like Victoria opened with an 80 on day one, but played consistent golf on Tuesday and finished with a 2 over par 74.
Doris Chen also finds herself in the Top 64 after qualifying in the 50th position. Doris shot rounds of 79-77.
Dottie Ardina is the only Leadbetter girl to miss the cut. Dottie found herself on the cut line at 158 after the two days of stroke play, so 11 girls had to return to the course for the final 7 spots on Tuesday evening. Tuesday evening found 2 girls advancing, but the other 9 had to return to the course Wednesday AM at 8:30 to continue their fight for the final 5 spots. Unfortunately, Dottie lost in the playoff of for one of the final spots.
The U.S. Girls' Junior continues today with the first round of match play. The second and third rounds will be played Thursday, the quarterfinal and semifinal matches are on Friday, and the 36-hole championship final will be played Saturday.
