IMG Academy Leadbetter golf program golfer, Rigerl Fernandes, shot a 2-under-par 70 to win by one in the Boys Division of the Hilton Head Junior All-Star. Conducted by the AJGA, the Hilton Head Junior All-Star was a 54-hole stroke play event held on the South Course at Berkeley Hall Club over the last three days. The tournament field featured 60 boys (and 17 girls) from 17 states, the United Arab Emirates, Barbados, British Colombia and Columbia. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,761 yards.
Rigel started off on day 1 with a 1-under par 71 and found himself a shot behind fellow IMG'er Rodrigo Munoz. On day two Rigel shot a 3-over par 75 and still found himself in striking distance going into the final day. So day three shaped up to be interesting, as there were 10 boys within 2 shots of the leaderâ¦..Rigel fell behind early on the front 9 and was 4 shots back at one point in the day. However, a chip in for eagle on hole #17 was enough to give him a shot lead going into the last hole and in the end was enough for his first AJGA win!
Even though this is Rigel's first AJGA win, it is now his 8th win in a year! Since September of 2009 he has won 4 Hurricane Junior Golf Tour events, 2 FCWT events and 1 U.S Kids event.
Rigel is coached by Leadbetter instructor Jay Denton!
Great job Rigel- Congratulations!
Also playing at the event was Daniel Jaramillo who finished 15th with rounds of 73-74-77, Osama Khan finished 22nd with rounds of 74-80-73, Rodrigo Munoz finished 25th after shooting 70-82-77 and Bernardo Curbelo shot 77-76-78 to finish in 33rd.
