As the biggest stop on the U.S. Open Summer Series thus far, the 2010Legg Mason Tennis Classic main drawkicked off today in the nation's capital. With a star-studded field including the likes of Andy Roddick, Fernando Verdasco, and David Nalbandian, two of IMG's finest players were victorious in their matches. A whopping nine years apart in age, both players showed their true colors today by coming from a set behind only to defeat their opponents 6-4 in the third set.
Nishikori, only twenty years old, defeated Kevin Anderson in the final round of qualifying 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 to book a spot in the main draw. Ranked # 196 in the ATP World rankings, Nishikori will play another qualifier in Igor Kunitsyn of Russia. The match is scheduled at 4 P.M. on stadium court and the winner will face #13 seed Gilles Simon in the next round.
Malisse, ranked #62 in the world,has been on a tear this summer reaching the quarterfinal or better at three of his last five events. The Belgian looks tobuild on hisfine formgoing into the U.S. Open as he defeated Santiago Giraldo of Colombia today 4-6, 3-6, 6-4. Up next for Malisse is #12 seed Julian Benneteau of France. With the clean bounces on the hard court, look for Malisse to swing his way into the third round.
