Despite breaking a bone in his foot during individual preseason workouts, former IMG Academy basketball program post-grad player J.T. Thomas has already made an impression at the University of Toledo.
From a recent column in the Toledo Blade:
And you would imagine the last thing he needed was having the only true point guard in the program be forced to undergo surgery, as J.T. Thomas is scheduled to do this morning, and be lost for at least one month and maybe six weeks.
"He's the best freshman leader I've seen in 22 years of coaching," Kowalczyk said Monday of Thomas, who will have a pin inserted to hopefully fix a partially fractured bone in his left foot.
From a recent story in the Toledo Blade:
A native of New Orleans who averaged 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game last season for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., Thomas suffered the injury during UT's individual workouts a few weeks ago...
Thomas was one of the more vocal players during practice Monday and said he's taken it upon himself to be a leader.
"I'm being the same leader I already am and continuing to be vocal," Thomas said. "I'm just trying to bring a positive energy, making sure everybody is competing and bringing it 100 percent every day."
Although it's not the start to his college career that he wanted, Thomas has been able to take the setback in stride.
"It doesn't really bother me when I'm playing, but it's better for me to have surgery so I can get it over with now," Thomas said. "I feel like I've already gotten better [since joining the Rockets>, and I'm going to continue working just as hard."
