Three IMG Academy baseball program players used the final day of the National Letter of Intent early signing period to announce their future destinations.
Brandon Bonilla (Sr., LH pitcher) -- Arizona State University
From the Arizona Republic:
The left-handed Bonilla -- son of former major leaguer Bobby Bonilla -- committed first to USC but said, "I always wanted to play at Arizona State. He lived and trained with former Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Fetters during the summer.
"I was very excited to sign on the dotted line," he said of his ASU letter of intent. "There's a lot of pride there, and I want to be part of that tradition," although the 6-2 Bonilla certainly figures to be drafted. "I'll wait until it comes down to it and see what the options are."
IMG Academy pitching coordinator Steve Frey said: "He's a great kid and so easy to work with. He's like a sponge when it comes to learning the game. He has a passion much like his dad did. ASU has got a real diamond for themselves."
Tyler McVicar (Post-grad, SS/3B)
From the Boston Herald:
Malden Catholic's Tyler McVicar, a three-year starter who was the top hitter in the Catholic Conference this past season (.446), has made a verbal commitment to accept a baseball scholarship to attend Elon University in Elon, N.C. in the fall of 2011.
McVicar, a Melrose resident, left today to begin a year of post-grad studies at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., before moving ontoElon a year from now. Elon has 13 players playing minor league ball in MLB and had four players drafted professionally this past June.
Charles Sheffield (Sr., 1B/P)
From head coach Danny Hall on RamblinWreck.com:
"A strong right-handed hitter that can play a lot of positions. He can play corner infield and on the corner in the outfield. Charles played for one of the best high school programs in the country at Columbus, and is currently enrolled at IMG Academy baseball program in Florida."
