Kei Nishikori is having a rather successful start to the 2011 year. After making it into the quarterfinals in Chennai, defeating the No. 2 seed along the way, the IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program trainee has advanced into the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. Nishikori has been working with mentor Brad Gilbert and also with his IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program coach Dante Bottini which has sparked his recent success.
In the first round of the event, Kei defeated world #58 Fabio Fognini and followed that up by beating #36 Florian Mayer in the second round 6-4, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3.
Nishikori is currently ranked #82 in the world and is building confidence after rattling off multiple victories against formidable opponents. Nishikori's next goal involves getting into the world Top-50 and looks to be well on his way as long as he can continue this type of play.
Kei will face 9th-ranked Fernando Verdasco in his upcoming third round match.
