At 22 years old, Freddy Adu will attempt to start another successful chapter in his journey to establish himself as a world-class soccer player.
It was announced this week that Adu was sent on loan to Turkish second division team Rizespor by Benfica, the Portuguese club that has owned his contract since 2007.
Adu spent three weeks at IMG Academy over the holiday season, grinding away with Athletic & Personal Development program specialists alongside athletes like Maria Sharapova, Vera Zvonareva and dozens of college football players training for the NFL Combine, while also joining scrimmages with the IMG Academy soccer program.
âWe are excited for both Freddy and Rizespor," said Athletic & Personal Development program director, Trevor Moawad, who still often works with Adu as a mental conditioning expert. "Freddy was the only athlete training in our weight room on Christmas Day, and you could unquestionably see his determination.
"His situation over the past 18 months has been much more complicated than most reports indicate and it is clear to me that he understands âthe time is now.' We have spent a lot of time with Freddy over the years and his focus now is most similar to the âdrive' you could see in him before the 2007 U20 World Championships in Canada.â
