This past Saturday, IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program student Danielle Collins beat out 127 other girls to win the 2011 USTA Spring 18s National Championship in Mobile, Alabama.
Collins, who won the event last year, only dropped two sets during her tournament run ,and defeated Catherine Harrison 6-1,6-1 in the championship match.
From Alabama News:
"If anybody had told me a week ago, even two days before the tournament started that I would have won the whole thing I wouldn't have believed them," Collins said. "I didn't have any confidence coming in. I just wanted to come in and try to get better each match. But after my quarterfinal round I thought, 'Wow, I've made an improvement.'"
Collins, also received the tournament's Sportsmanship Award.
"We normally try not to give the Sportsmanship Award to the tournament champion but this year these two players [ Collins and boy's champion Zack McCourt> had the best sportsmanship hands down," tournament director Scott Novak said. "Between sets Danielle Collins was talking to kids in the crowd and relaxing. She worked with the St. Luke's kids earlier in the week and has been outstanding.
