After being selected in the 2nd round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees, IMG Academy baseball program alum J.R. Murphy has started moving his way up the organization.
From a PinstripesPlus.com interview with Mark Newman, Senior VP of Baseball Operations for the Yankees:
"J.R. Murphy is a more powerful, explosive player physically; arm strength catching and impact offensively, the ability to drive the ball in the gaps and over the fence. He took a significant step forward physically, just maturing I guess and (with) the strength program. I think his throwing arm is a full grade better."
Murphy currently leads the Charleston RiverDogs, a single-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, with 14 RBI and is tied for the team lead with three home runs. He is third on the team with a .333 batting average.
He was also recently named the No. 14 prospect in the Yankees farm system by Pinstripe Alley:
The first thing everyone notices about Murphy is his swing and hitting ability. He has a simple, compact, and level swing that produces good bat speed and is conducive to line drives. Combined with a disciplined approach, Murphy should have no trouble hitting for average as he climbs the ladder. At 6â²-0â³ tall and 190 lbs, he stands to add muscle as he fills out, which should allow him to drive a healthy amount of balls out of the park down the road.
