Alfredo Escalera of the IMG Academy baseball program, only a junior, has verbally committed to play baseball for Florida State University upon graduating in 2012.
Escalera, like many of today's top baseball players, grew up playing ball in Puerto Rico. He learned the games on fields that had no grass on the infield and were torn up in the outfield. His father, wanting a better opportunity for his son, took advice from a friend who had sent his son to IMG to play soccer and suggested that the Escalera do the same for his son.
When Alfredo was nine, he and his father attended an IMG Academy baseball program camp, and would do the same until the age of 13, when Alfredo began attending the IMG Academy baseball program as an Academy student.
Alfredo currently splits time at shortstop between junior varsity and varsity. Compositely, he is batting .506 with 29 RBIs and has a .766 slugging percentage, all of which are team-leading.
Alfredo isn't sure where he would be without the aid of IMG Academy.
"I have gotten better at everything since coming to IMG Academy. I have gotten physically bigger and have sharpened my mental skills. The coaches here have helped my infielding skills get a lot better too."
While dreams of playing in the pros like his idols Hanley Ramirez and Robinson Cano may be on the horizon, Alfredo insists college comes first.
