Adding to its history of sending players to the Majors, the IMG Academy baseball program today had three players selected in the MLB Draft.
IMG Academy baseball program has had at least two players selected in the draft in each of the past four seasons.
Some info on each:
* Brandon Bonilla (LHP, Committed to Arizona State). Drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 37th Round. The son of former MLB-er Bobby Bonilla, Brandon went 2-2 this season with a 1.38 ERA and 63 strikeouts over 45 innings.
"He's a big-game pitcher," said Ken Bolek, Director of the IMG Academy baseball program. "He's a competitor. He's continued to develop as a pitcher and utilizes a power fastball and curveball as his 'out' pitches, while working on a change-up."
* Matt Martin (Catcher). Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 44th Round. Martin batted .429 with nine doubles, 23 RBI and a .714 slugging percentage.
"His compact hitting approach and good bat speed allows him to hit to all fields with gap and pull power," Bolek said. "Behind the plate, he has good arm strength and sound receiving skills. He lives to play baseball."
* Charles Sheffield (1B, Committed to Georgia Tech). Drafted by the Oakland A's int he 49th Round. Batted .395 with eight doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI.
"He's a very versatile player, with a future as a corner infield guy with capability to also play in the outfield because of his arm strength," Bolek said. "He has solid bat speed with above average power. His intelligence and work ethic will help him succeed wherever he plays."
