Wood Bat League action at IMG Academy resumed once again on Thursday as each team faced off at 10:00AM. The game of the day was featured on Field 3, with the undefeated Hurricanes facing the Conquistadors. Let's dive into Thursday's League action.
Game of the Day: Hurricanes v. Conquistadors
The undefeated Hurricanes squared off against the underdog Conquistadors. Although this matchup seemed one-sided, the Conquistadors played past expectations and battled through a tough 8-inning game.
Takumi got the start for the Conquistadors while Aaron Downard got the start for the Hurricanes. In the top of the 1st, Tommy Georgevich reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Georgevich was caught stealing by Jake Hollis, Luke Parseghian drew a 2 out walk. Parseghian took second on a passed ball and quickly stole third during the next at bat. Joey Pinney took advantage of the Conquistador mishaps with a 2 out scorching double into the right field corner, scoring Parseghian.
With the score 1-0 in the bottom of the 2nd, the Conquistadors looked to take the lead. Garrett Schultz led off the inning with a single followed by two consecutive walks drawn by Thomas Walsh and Jake Hollis. With bases loaded, Andrew Jaffoni hit into a fielder's choice to second base, scoring Schultz. Ben Rosenbaum would take one for the team to load the bases as the Conqs looked to threaten once more. Walsh scored on a passed ball and Hunter Sonn drew a walk to load the bases one more time. The Hurricanes put an end to the threat when Hollis attempted to tag up on a Daniel McGill fly out to center, being thrown out by Parseghian.
Landon Sklar came in to pitch in the bottom of the 3rd for the Hurricanes and would struggle to get through the inning. Jonathan Raskin led off the inning with a triple to the right field corner, followed by a Chris Reyes pop out and a Clay Coleman HBP. A missed signal proved costly for the Conqs. Coleman attempted to draw a throw at first in an attempt to score Raskin from third. The Hurricanes defended the play perfectly whenRaskin was cut down trying to score at home. After a wild pitch,Schultz would make the Hurricanes pay with an RBI single, scoring Coleman. Schultz would end up at 3rd as the result of two more Hurricanes wild pitches. Walsh drew a walk in the next at bat and stole second, without a throw. Hollis followed with a walk to load the bases. Andrew Jaffoni was hit by a pitch, scoring Schultz. The bleeding stopped as Marshall Hayden came on in relief, striking out Ben Rosenbaum to end the 3rd.
With the Conqs in the lead 4-1, Pinney hit a 2-out bomb to the warning track in right-center in the top of the 4th, followed by an infield single by Sam Lister. The threat was quickly brought to a halt as Takumi struck out Hayden to end the inning.
After a quick couple of innings, the Hurricanes went on a scoring rampage in the top of the 6th. Sklar led off the inning with a HBP and a stolen base, followed by a walk by Luke Darnell. Downard sacrifice bunted to put runners in scoring position at 2nd and 3rd. Georgevich singled in Sklar, picking up his first RBI of the day. Connor Rose blasted a triple for the second consecutive game, scoringDarnell and Georgevich to tiethe game. Parseghian walked and advanced to 3rd on two consecutive balks by Rosenbaum, which allowedRose to score. Pinney continued the scoring threat with a sky-high sac fly to center, scoring Parseghian. After Lister walked, Rosenbaum still was not coming set from the stretch, getting called for his third balk of the inning. Finally, Hayden grounded out to end the inning, with the score 6-4, Hurricanes.
In the bottom of the 6th, Jaffoni led off the inning and later scored on with a RBI single by Andrew Wilkes to make the score 6-5. Raskin scored Rosenbaum (who had walked)on an E6 to tie the game at 6 apiece. Jacob McGowan entered in relief for the Hurricanes butthe Conqs would take the lead 7-6 with an infield single by Coleman.
The Hurricanes suffered a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 7th, and the Conqs would tack on one more run in the bottom half, with a line drive single by Rosenbaum, scoring Walsh.
The Conqs went into the top of the 8th with an 8-6 lead and 2 quick outs. After Downard walked, McGill came in to pitch. Georgevich scorched a line drive single to center field, as the center fielder let the ball get under his glove, scoring Downard and putting Georgevich on 3rd. The next batter, Rose, hit a bloop single over the shortstop to tie the game 8-8. Walsh would come on to pitch and tally the final out when Pinney hit a hard grounder in the right side hole. As the Hurricanes sought the lead run, Parseghian was struck by the ball while running to 2nd, ending the inning and keeping the score at 8-8.
Pinney came on in the bottom of the 8th to shut the Conqs down. The game ended in the 8th due to time limit, with the final score a tie, 8-8.
