Last night was a battle of IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program alums as Ryan Harrison defeated fourth seed, Xavier Malisse, in the second round of the Atlanta Tennis Championships. The match was filled with excitement as it went to three sets. Malisse was able to snag the first set from Harrison in a tiebreaker but Harrison bounced back despite raindelaysand won the next two sets, 6-4 6-4.
Harrison now moves on to the Quarterfinals. This is his second ATP World Tour level Quarterfinal with his last one at the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in 2010. He is the only teenager and youngest player in the Atlanta Tennis Championships draw and is currently ranked #120 in world rankings. Additionally, Harrison is the youngest player to have won an ATP World Title Tour this year in singles and doubles after winning the Doubles title with Matthew Ebden in Newport a couple of weeks ago. Malisse is the fifth top 50 ranked player that Harrison has defeated this year.
Harrison will play his Quaterfinal matchagainst Rajeev Ram tonight at Racquet Club of the South. Ram recently defeated world former number one, Lleyton Hewitt. Televised coverage of the tournament begins today on ESPN 2.
