The High School Wood Bat League playoffs kicked off Tuesday at Academy Parks. The third seeded Conquistadors squared off against the sixth seeded Lightning and the fourth seeded Hurricanes faced off against the fifth seeded Manatees. The one seeded Marauders and the two seeded SeaDogs both had a first round âbyeâ. Let's take a look at the opening round action in the 2011 Wood Bat League playoffs.
Game of the Day: Conquistadors vs. Lightning
The Conquistadors ace, Ben Rosenbaum started the game for the Conquistadors as the Lightning countered with Trevor Schott. Many were a little perplexed as to why the Lightning did not start Austin Bell or Zach Duncan, their two aces. Although Schott has not been the Lightning's ace throughout the regular season, Schott proved to everybody why he was a perfect candidate to start game one of the playoffs for the Lightning as he pitched six innings of shut out baseball.
The pace was slow to start but picked up in the top half of the third inning after Duncan singled to left to start the inning. Mental errors plagued the Conquistadors and resulted in an early deficit in this game. Abalk and a pass ball landed Duncan on third with no outs. It seemed as though Rosenbaum would get out of the jam, retiring the next two batters he faced, but error struck again for the Conquistadors. James Hoofnagle hit a routine play to the shortstop, but an errant throw put Hoofnagle on first and scored Duncan from third for the first run of the afternoon.
The Lightning weren't done, striking again in the very next inning. Bell led off the inning with a hit by pitch andstole second on the very next pitch to put him in scoring position. He then advanced to third on an error by the catcher. After a Robert Scherl ground out, Seungjae Chi hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Bell from third.
Although the Conquistadors continued to threaten the rest of the game, they could not get a run across the dish. Pitching was the main story for the Lightning as their pitchers combined to shutout the favored Conquistadors. The final score was 2-0, Lightning.
