IMG Academy soccer program retires six jerseys

The IMG Academy soccer program Hall of Fame corridor

After its inaugural class, the IMG Academy soccer program has added six more to its prestigious list of retired jerseys.

IMG Academy soccer program has now retired the jerseys of 25 former players and coaches who played an instrumental role in helping the IMG Academy soccer program get to where it is today as one of the top talent-producing clubs in the country.

The banners are hung in the corridor that all IMG and visiting teams walk through when leaving the locker rooms for the fields.

The honored six, with comments from IMG Academy soccer program Director Tom Durkin:

Dave Mahoney, #4, Class of 2002: David Mahoney was the outstanding Goalkeeper of his class leading the PDL 2002 squad to a berth in the national semifinals. An intelligent soccer athlete, Dave went on to play at Brown and Cornell before signing with the MLS Chicago Fire.

Brad Russin, #4, Class of 2005: A giant in stature, Brad Russin was very good with his feet and unbeatable in the air. A very gracious player, Brad never used his size or weight unfairly and subsequently attracted the attention of UCLA where he played a big part in a NCAA Championship run. Brad now plays for the Carolina Railhawks.

Sanel Boric, #0, Class of 2006: Sanel Boric is a truly remarkable goalkeeper with all the attributes that led from high school straight to the pros. A long frame, quick feet, sure hands and cat-like reflexes made Sanel a hot commodity as a 19 year old and he was off to Europe. A great shot-stopper and catcher of crosses, Sanel marshaled the goal box like a seasoned veteran from the early stages of his development.

Anthony Ampaipitakwong, #8, Class of 2007: “Ampai” is the most talented midfield player to grace the fields at IMG Academy. After a stint in the US Soccer residency program, Anthony moved over to IMG and never looked back. He captained IMG sides that won the Sun Bowl, Dallas Cup, League Cup, Men's League State Final, State Cup Final and PDL semifinals twice. After IMG, Anthony attended the University of Akron where he led them to a NCAA Championship and helped form one of college soccer's most prolific programs. Anthony is in his first season with the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS.

Zarek Valentin, #4, Class of 2008: Zarek is a versatile defender who has poise, guile and tenacity. One of the most competitive individuals to represent IMG, Z's appetite for the game has caught the eye of every National Team coach in his age range and has represented the US on all of its youth National Teams. Akron Coach Caleb Porter spotted him early on at IMG and Zarek played along Ampai and Blair Gavin at Akron, eventually winning the NCAA championship before joining MLS with Chivas USA.

Gale Agbossoumonde, #2, Class of 2008: The “Man Child”, Gale had more raw potential than any athlete to come through IMG. Fast, powerful, strong and skillful are the first words that spring to mind when you see Gale. If he puts his mind to it, Gale can be world class. Gale has already been called into the Full National team at the age of 19. A true character, Gale was a headache to coaches, yet beloved by his teammates and feared by opponents.
