NFL football is finally back and Week 1 provided ample opportunities for athletes trained at IMG Academy.
Cam Newton knows that everyone is watching him and he definitely gave them a show on Sunday afternoon. Even though his Panthers lost to the Cardinals, Newton showed poise not often seen by a rookie in his debut. Newton threw for 422 yards with 2 touchdowns while adding another with his running ability. His 422 yards smashed the previous record for yards thrown by a rookie in week 1 (302 by Peyton Manning). In his first game as Panthers' quarterback, Newton was 1 yard short of tying the franchise record for passing set by IMG Academy football program director, Chris Weinke.
Anquan Boldin caught 4 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens' great win over the rival Steelers.
Despite leaving the game for a few series in the 2nd half with a leg cramp, Tampa Bay's Josh Freeman threw for 257 with a touchdown in the Buccaneers' close loss to the Detroit Lions.
D'Qwell Jackson recorded 10 tackles and 2 sacks in the Browns' loss to the Bengals. Also for the Browns, Ben Watson added 1 touchdown on 3 catches.
Dexter McCluster was one of the bright spots for the Kansas City Chiefs during their 41-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills. McCluster set up the Chiefs for their only score with a 23 yard run on his way to totaling 42 rushing yards and catching 25 more.
Darren McFadden ran for 150 yards on 22 attempts in the Raiders' win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night. He also added 6 more yards on 1 catch.
