Pelosi will be slotted into the club's academy training program, where he presumably will be groomed for a spot on the first team. As an example, David Beckham first was signed by Manchester United as a 14-year-old in 1989, and played on the club's youth teams until first appearing for the top team in a Premier League game in 1995.
"You just don't see that kind of competitiveness and concentration in a lot of 8- and 9-year-olds," Baicher said.
At 14, Pelosi started playing in the U.S. national team program. In 2009, he joined the IMG Academy soccer program, the full-time residency program in Bradenton, Fla.
Pelosi, who is 6-foot and 170 pounds, is regarded by many as the nation's No. 1 recruit from the Class of 2012, and he verbally committed to play at UCLA. He recently realized that he had bigger plans and a larger marketability.
He had eight goals in 28 appearances for the United States Under-17 team, and he captained the squad that advanced to the round of 16 in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in July. With dual-passport status and summers spent training in Europe with the Borussia Monchengladbach club, he decided to chase a professional career.
"It's a great feeling knowing that the work I have put in the last few years has paid huge dividends," Pelosi said.
