After a stellar amateur career highlighted by a U.S. Amateur championship, two AJGA Rolex Player of the Year awards and No. 1 worldwide ranking, IMG Academy Leadbetter golf program Golf Academy alum Peter Uihlein has decided to turn pro.
Uihlein will start his career on the European Tour, beginning with a spot in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championships in late January alongside names like Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Tiger Woods.
Abu Dhabi figures to be the first of seven sponsor exemptions Uihlein can receive in Europe. He also would be eligible for up to seven on the American PGA Tour, too.
âAs a path to achieve my goals, I am focusing on achieving exempt status on the PGA European Tour and am looking ahead to that challenge,â Uihlein said. âIf you focus on the process of getting better, goals and objectives have a way of being achieved.â
In addition to his U.S. Amateur title, Uihlein was a two-time AJGA Rolex Player of the Year. Within the AJGA, he had six victories and 26 top 10s from 2004 to '07. He won nine amateur and collegiate tournaments within an 18-month span and was named the R&A Amateur of the Year in 2010 and the Ben Hogan Award winner in 2011.
