Three varsity football players from Derby High School in Derby, Kansas took advantage of their spring break and paid a visit to the IMG Academy football program. Teammates linebacker Braxton Jones (Class of 2013), running back Tyler West (Class of 2014) and defensive back Travis Young (Class of 2014) utilized their time spent at IMG Academy to prepare for the 2012 season. Along with their teammates, they have their eyes set on a state championship following a loss in the state playoff semi-finals last season.

The threesome took time out of their training schedules to sit down and discuss football and their experience at IMG Academy.

RB Tyler West (Derby, KA/Derby HS/Class of 2014)

…Training at IMG Academy

“I have really improved on my route running, making sharp cuts and not foreshadowing my change of direction. There have been some really good conditioning drills I have learned here that work on footwork, speed and agility that I will be able to incorporate back home in my routine."

…Preparing for upcoming junior season

“I want to become a more reliable every down back continuing to better myself at pass blocking, ability to create space in route running and improving my footwork. I want to get to the state championship getting past the semi-finals where we ended last year. Personally I want to get more yards from scrimmage and increase the number of receptions on the season.”

….Thoughts from IMG Academy football program's Paul Fair who instructed West during his camp experience

“Tyler has great quickness with how he's able to recognize a defense pre-snap, make a read, and accelerate through the hole. He's a good pass-catcher and is capable of being an every down back.”

DB Travis Young (Derby, KA/Derby HS/Class of 2014)

…Training at IMG Academy

“It has really upgraded my approach in how I train for football. I have been shown how to pay attention to the little details that make a huge difference on the field. As a defensive back being able to pick up on receiver tells, allows you to know what is coming next before they make a change of direction; it goes a long way! When I back pedal the staff here has coached me on keeping my hips under me so when I break on the ball I can have an explosive first step and get to where I need to be to make a play. I have also gained a better knowledge on how to pick up tells that quarterbacks give off, being able to eliminate certain sections of the field based off those reads. "

…Preparing for upcoming junior season

“We made it to the state semi-finals and we want to at least maintain that if not get to the finals and win the whole thing. This offseason I really want to determine my position as a safety or cornerback, continue to work on my special teams role and gain some weight. IMG Academy has helped educated me on my nutrition which is a large part of gaining size.”

MLB Braxton Jones (Derby, KA/ Derby HS/Class of 2013)

…Training at IMG Academy

“The mental conditioning here is great; it's a college training atmosphere, with my goal to get a division one scholarship I have good perspective on how to approach my senior season. The coaches here have really helped me understand man and zone coverage, I now understand my assignments in bothcoveragemorethoroughly. In man-to-man coverage, I have learned how to pick up on small reads and tells allowing me to get a great jump on where I need to position myself to make the play. In zone, I understand my assignment and know where my help is and is not, I feel a lot more confident moving around in zone coverage. Much of the footwork, physical conditioning and speed work is new to me and is stuff that I can take back with me to teach the younger guys and use for myself in the off season."

…Preparing for the upcoming senior season

“Last year we made it to the state semi-finals and we want to get to that championship game. As an individual I want to earn All State honors and possibly All American honors, I understand neither will come easy but training here as shown me the work ethic I will need day in and day out. I would like to get bigger and stronger while improving my 40-time which will take good nutrition and dedication to my conditioning but I think it can be done. I would like to come back to train at IMG Academy prior the start of the season if I am able as I have learned a lot being here. I have received attention from Northern Iowa and Missouri and want to have a solid senior season to secure offers from big time programs.”
