Maria Sharapova (RUS) vs. Sara Errani (ITA)
Errani's dream run continued as she defeated Sam Stosur in the semis to reach her first career Grand Slam singles final and she has also secured a ranking in the top 10 for the first time (the third Italian to do so after Schiavone and Pennetta). She is also playing in the doubles final with partner Roberta Vinci against the team of Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova. There are no words to describe what a great tournament this has been for her!
Sharapova reached the finals of the French Open for the first time in her career and she is looking to complete the career Grand Slam. The IMG Academy Bollettieri tennis program alum has also regained the #1 ranking no matter the result. She beat Petra Kvitova in the semis in straight sets and has now beaten her three straight times in 2012. She is playing fantastic tennis and will definitely be the favorite in this match.
This is the first career meeting between Sharapova and Errani and it promises to be an interesting match. Errani isn't a big girl as she stands only 5'4", but she is smart. She moves exceptionally well across the court - in fact she looks like she is gliding. She doesn't have the firepower of Sharapova, but she didn't have the firepower of Stosur either and she was able to beat her. Sharapova cannot take her lightly and she has to serve well. To me, this match comes down to Sharapova' serve. If her serve is working, as it was against Kvitova for much of the match, then she should be able to control points from the outset. She should also be able to jump all over Errani's serve as she is one of the top returners in the game.
I have to give the edge here to Sharapova. She is playing with great focus and has the experience. The entire Academy will be rooting her on. I look for her to win in two, possibly three sets.
