Game of the Day: Wild Comeback Comes Up Empty for Marauders
Easily one of the most exciting games in the WBL thus far, both teams came out swinging in a battle that would need extra innings to declare a victor. The Conquistadors struck first (in the 1st) with singles from Peyton Thomas, Mitchell Gallagher and Barrett Snyder. These hits along with a few Marauder errors gave the the Conquistadors an early 3-0 lead. This lead would not last long, however as the Marauders answered back in the bottom half of the inning. A lead-off single from Christian Bloesl and a reached-on-error from McClain Bradley as well as great baserunning from both players allowed the Marauders to cut the lead to 3-2.
The game would remain relatively quiet until the 4th inning when the Conquistador offense exploded for 5 runs. The first five hitters of the inning all reached base and would go on to score. The big hits in the inning came off of the bats of Barrett Snyder (double), Bobby Leyman (single), and Liam Killingstad (single). This part of the order would tack on one more in the 5th when Leyman knocked in Snyder to give the Conquistadors a six-run lead.
The Marauders entered the bottom of the 7th trailing by 6 runs and the "fat lady" finishing her final warm-up scales. John Halverson kept hope alive when, after falling behind 0-2, smacked a double to left center. Following the double was 5 free passes in a row including four walks and a hit-by-pitch that really injected life into the Marauder offense. Another single from Bloesl brought the game within 2 runs and Cameron Rogers scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run contest with just one out. Clean-up hitter Max Furbee stepped up to the plate needing only to put the ball in play and, on the first pitch of the at-bat, he did just that, grounding into a fielders choice that brought home the tying run.
The Marauder rally would end with the score tied after the regulation 7 innings sending the game into extra frames. Extra innings would only last an inning as the Conquistadors swung the momentum back in their favor with singles from Garret Schultz, Peyton Thomas and Mitchell Gallagher resulting in a 3-run lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Conquistadors' Dan Kennon gave up a lead-off single to Taishi Kato but then followed up with three quick outs to stifle the comeback attempt and close the victory for the Conquistadors by a score of 12-9.
