IMG Academy 14U WBL Weekend Game Recaps: Buccaneers Ride 5-Run Inning to Win Over Wahoos

Game of the Week: Buccaneers Ride 5-Run Inning to Win Over Wahoos

In the first round of Friday games for the 14U Wood Bat League, the Buccaneers took on the Wahoos on the IMG Academy campus. The Wahoos came to play early scoring their first run in the top half of the first inning thanks to some "small ball" from the top of the lineup. Jonathan Miller led off the game by taking one for the team but he didn't let that stop him from stealing 2nd base just a few pitches later. Parker Haskin followed Miller with a sacrifice bunt to put the lead-off hitter at 3rd with just one out. To complete the circle of a textbook manufactured run, the 3-hitter Brandon Hamlet scored Miller with a sacrifice fly to left-center to make it 1 -0 contest.

The top of the Wahoos order would play a different role in the 4th inning and that was the role of "table-setters." Haskin and Hamlet earned 1-out base-on-balls followed by the clean-up hitter, Jack McClure, who reached thanks to a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded, Geoff Beere stepped up to the plate and, on the very first pitch, smacked a single to left-field to drive in Haskin. Next came Dimitri Gridas, who laced a single of his own to left field to score Hamlet. McClure would soon score thanks to a Buccaneers error making it a 4-0 game.

Down 4-0, the Buccaneers would use their half of the 4th inning to turn the tables on the Wahoos. Lead by singles from Josh Levy, John Spinnell and Graham Core as well as a John Phillips' walk and a Jordan Wergiles' hit-by-pitch, the Wahoos scored 5 runs in the inning to take the lead by a score of 5-4. The Wahoos would load the bases in the 5th thanks to walks to Scott Kauffman and Miller as well as a single from Haskin but would ultimately come up empty. Matt Lynch stifled any hopes of a Wahoos comeback with a fantastic final 3 innings for the Buccaneers striking out 3 while allowing only 3 hits.
