Game of the Day: Royals Score Big in Extra to Top Wahoos 7-4
As the IMG Academy High School Wood Bat League teams are fighting for their chance at the WBL title, the 14U WBL teams are doing all they can in the final week of the regular season to put themselves in the best position to win a championship in next week's playoffs. The most exciting game on Wednesday came in a contest between the Royals and Wahoos. Both teams would exchange the lead on multiple occasions in a game that would eventually go to extra innings.
The Royals jumped out to an early lead in the top half of the 1st thanks in large part to a huge lead-off triple from Brandon Mabry. The Royals 3-hitter Frank Diorio would reach on an error to score Mabry to make it a 1-0 game. Diorio would soon score on an RBI-single from Mack Lauder to extend the lead to 2-0.
It wasn't long before the the Wahoos would fight their way back into the game, scoring a run in both the 2nd and 3rd inning to tie the game. In the 2nd, Brandon Hamlet took advantage of Royals errors and stole a base to score the Wahoos' first run. JT Parsons would follow by smacking a single and later scoring to tie the game in the 3rd inning. The game would not remain tied for long as the Royals' Kaeber Rog would lead off the top of the 4th by reaching on a drop-third strike before scoring on an error to give the Royals the lead once again by a score of 3-2.
The score would sit at 3-2 until the Wahoos were down to their last inning in the bottom of the 7th. Sparked by Adam Little who took one for the team to reach base, the Wahoos would follow with back-to-back singles from Sam Suslavich and Jonathan Miller to score Little to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 8th, the Royals decided that they didn't want to play too much bonus baseball and came out swinging. A lead-off single from Lauder began a hit parade that would see singles from Mabry and William Simeone as well as a big double off the bat of Kerry Wright. The Royals would score a total of 4 runs in the top of the 8th to take a commanding 7-3 lead. The Wahoos would threaten in the bottom of the 8th putting the tying run at the plate with just one out thanks to hits from George Beere, Mike Wilson and Parsons. However, they could only scratch across one run as the Royals secured the 7-4 extra-inning victory.
