Serena Williams (USA) vs CoCo Vandeweghe (USA)
Coco has come a long way and still is young at 21. Her family background has super athleticism which she has inherited. She can do so many things, but in my opinion she has not found out her style of play that will give her the big wins.
Serena is a player that will accept nothing less than the championship trophy. Her game is quite simple- put pressure on you at all times, especially on her return of serve. You cant forget about the most powerful serve in the history of Ladies Tennis.
The only factor that can take her out is injury.
Nick's Pick- Serena will move on to round two.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA) vs Venus Williams (USA)
Bethanie has been around for awhile and is nobodys fool when playing singles or doubles. She lost in the first round last year.Venus has shown signs of brightness including winning the Olympic doubles with her sister. She lost in the 2nd round last year (Walkover). The question mark will be the physical make up of venus which has shown definite positive signs.
Bethanie must move Venus at all times and try to have long rallies. I am sure she will pick on Venus' forehand that can go astray when having to hit it on the run. Venus must be much more consistent with her first serve, she needs to have some quick points. OH YES! Venus will attack and this is very important.
Nick's Pick- Venus has the edge in this match but she does not want it to go to a long 3rdset.
Petra Martic (CRO) vs Sam Stosur (AUS)
Petra plays in streaks and when shes hot, she is hot, including a win over Jelena Jankovic in Thailand. But, she has a reputation of also being hot headed at times.
Sam is a super athlete who spends endless hours in the gym including doing cardio workouts. She is a solid player in all areas of the game but the longer the rally goes on from the baseline her changes get smaller. Same must be more aggressive including coming to the net.
Will be interesting to see Sam experiences a fair summer knowing she was last year's US Open champion. My little tip, last year is history. Play one match at a time and concentrate until that match is over.
Nick's Pick- Sam Stosur will be the winner but her chances lessen if she gets in long rallies.
Victoria Duval (USA) vs Kim Clijsters (BEL)
Wow! This match will be interesting because this is the first time that Vicky will play in the main draw of the US Open. She is only 17 and got this honor by winning the girls 18 and under championships.Vicky spent several years of her tennis life at the IMG Academy. Since June she has been a student of the USTA training center.
Kim will always be kim and her trademark is being able to slide on any surface including the hard court. No one is more competitive than kim and she gives it all on every single point. This will be her last US Open, the tour and all the world will miss her in so many ways.
Vicky Duval-Vicky will be in the area of 5'10 to 6'. She moves very well for her height and it will be a must for her to work more and more physically. She must have lower body strength. She has a darn good, aggressive forehand but against Kim she must keep her balls deep and high.
Her two handed backhand is also very aggressive but at times she can hit too short. She has a lot of confidence at the net and this must be used in the first round. The one area of doubt is being too tentative with her serve, especially the second serve. She must get more first serves in.
Kim-Her biggest asset is her movement. She has excellent lower body foundation and can do it all. She is extremely competitive and is always coming after her opponent.
Nick's Pick- Vicky must get into the match from the very first point and move kim all over the place. When in trouble she must hit deep down the center. Most importantly she has to get a high % of her first serves in. Kim will be kim and I am sure she will not take the new comer with kindness but will jump on all defensive balls. Winner will be clisters but Vicky has a chance to show the world, âWatch out for me.â
