Nandini Das delivered a memorable performance in the 51st annual Junior Orange Bowl. Das, a native of India, participated in the Girls 14s division and earned a commanding victory in her first match over the No. 17 seed, Japan’s Mayuka Aikawa, 6-0, 6-0. The win supplied Das with the momentum she needed moving into the later rounds. She played 14 total matches until she was defeated on Monday in the semi finals of the consolation round 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. In spite of the loss, Das finished in 8th place among the field in the tournament.
Das was joined in the Girls 14s division by fellow IMG Reliance student-athlete Shweta Sangwan. After qualifying, Shweta won in straight sets against Ashley Almonte, but then suffered a tough loss in the second round to Caroline Dolehide of Illinois. Sangwan moved into the consolation bracket and won 3 consecutive matches, until an unexpected injury occurred affecting her wrist forcing her to retire from the event. Sangwan was able to finish No. 32 overall in the field of 155.
Additionally, IMG Academy student-athlete Nada Dimovska joined them at the event, playing in the Girls 12s division. Dimovska was a fierce competitor and made it all the way to the main draw semifinals, to face No. 1 seed Abigail Desiatnikov. Dimovska played tough and fought for every point, but fell to Desiatnikov after a brilliant run, 6-4, 6-3.
