Boston College left-tackle, John Wetzel, follows a line of players from BC who trained at IMG Academy to get prepared for the draft. Last year, LB Luke Kuechly went 9th overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, and OL Anthony Costanzo went 22nd overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. Wetzel has been here for nearly two weeks, and we were able to catch up with him to see how his time has been so far, learn more about his twin brother and how he once broke a backboard in high-school.
John Wetzel on…
…mindset of an offensive lineman: I know that my mind set is, in order for us to have success we have to execute up front. So first and foremost I’m looking to do my job first. If I do my job, I will set up my teammates to do their job and we can win the game. I also try to look at what defense the other team will be running, what formations they’ll be running. It makes it easier on me if I already know what they’re going to be doing. I have to make pre-snap reads.
…your time at Boston College: My time at Boston College was great. I’m sad it’s gone. The biggest highlight was the people I met up there. My teammates and my fellow students – it’s a community. People talk about the Boston College community and it really is like that. Gaining my degree in communications from that school was great.
…Boston College’s new coaching hire, Steve Addazio: I met him once before I left. He’s a high energy guy. Really gets after it. He doesn’t let the small things fly, which I think is best for our program right now. He’s going to get everyone to work hard and push through. I think he’s a good hire. Talking to people that played at Florida and Temple, they all had high praise.
…his twin brother: He’s doing good. He played football for a year or two and decided to stop playing. He transferred to small school right outside of Pittsburgh. [He’s] doing well, majoring in marketing and in the whole frat life. He’s doing well in his grades and we talk every once in a while. We have a good connection – I mean he’s basically my best friend. He’s one of the guys that like staying at home, so he’ll probably stay in Pittsburgh.
…one thing people don’t know about you: I would say there are two things. I got up to a brown belt in Karate, which helped me with my coordination, movement, balance and agility. The other was that basketball was my first love. I actually broke a backboard playing. That was actually one of the coolest things I’ve done. I had to get stitches in my shoulder. I tip dunked it, and the back board broke.
…where he would go if he could go anywhere: I would say Brazil. From what I can tell, I’m a young guy, and it’s a good place to see the beaches and meet some good looking women down there. I figure while I’m young and want to have fun, Brazil would be the place to be.
…how he found out about IMG Academy: I found out through a couple of my teammates and I signed with the same agent as them. So I eventually decided to come down here like the rest of their clients, because they had seen some good results.
…IMG Academy: I’ve been here for a week and a half or two weeks. There’s just so much here. They offer everything that I need. At first when I came down, I thought I was just coming down to work out and doing some conditioning stuff. I quickly realized there was so much more with treatment, massage therapy and getting your body back. There so many programs that help for that with the state of the art facilities. [They’re] big too. I got lost the first few days. It’s a great place. The best place I could possibly be to make it to the NFL.
