In their second match of the pre-season, the Columbus Crew once again came away victorious with a 2-1 defeat of the Chicago Fire at IMG Academy.
The Fire nearly took the lead in the sixth minute when Wells Thompson sent a right-footed blast on frame, but goalkeeper Matt Lampson was able to deny the attempt on goal. The Crew recovered from the early scare and went ahead in the 21st minute after Crew veteran Eddie Gaven was taken down inside the box by Fire goalkeeper Neal Kitson. Midfielder Frederico Higuaín calmly sent the keeper the wrong way to give Columbus the lead with an easy score.
In the second half, each team fielded different lineups mixing trialists, draft picks and reserve team members. However, the second half played out similarly to the first, and in the 61st minute Crew trialist Sercan Gúvenisik finished off a counterattack to double the lead.
The Fire did record a consolation goal in the 89th minute when their recent draft pick Yazid Atouba blasted a shot into the back of the net, but the Crew held on for the victory.
The Fire returned back to Chicago after the match, and will enter phase two of their preseason in Ventura, Calif. Meanwhile, the Columbus Crew have one more match against the New York Red Bulls at 11:00 a.m. ET before heading back to Columbus, Ohio.
