IMG Academy Bollettieri Tennis trainee and IMG Tennis client Sabine Liskicki, the No. 23 ranked player on the WTA, pulled a monumental upset at Wimbledon today as she knocked off World No. 1 ranked Serena Williams in the Round of 16 by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. It was a hard fought win for Lisicki, who was down 2-0 to start the third and deciding set. However, the 23-year old from Germany stormed back to take match point. Lisicki double-faulted to cede the advantage to Williams, but came back with ferocious back-to-back serves to re-take the advantage. Lisicki rallied on match point, scoring the final point and ousting the reigning Wimbledon ladies champion.
Lisicki, a native of Troisdorf, Germany, was named as the WTA's Comeback Player of the Year in 2011 after overcoming an ankle injury. Nearly one-year ago to the day at Wimbledon, Lisicki knocked off top-seeded, and then World No. 1, Maria Sharapova by the score of 6-4, 6-3.
