IMG Academy alumnus Rich Baerga, a member of the Class of 2010, is racking up honors in Division-II St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) of the East Coast Conference. Baerga was recognized by the National College Baseball Writer's Association as a third-team Preseason All-American after hitting .336 in 2013, along with 22 RBI and 20 stolen bases as Aquinas went on to win the ECC conference title and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
More from the East Coast Conference release:
Bridgeport, Conn. - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released their Preseason Division II East Region poll, as well as their Preseason All-America and All-Region Teams on Wednesday evening.
In the East Region poll, defending East Coast Conference Champion, St. Thomas Aquinas was ranked No. 4. The Spartans were the only conference member in the top-10. Dowling was the only other ECC member school to receive votes in the poll. No ECC school was listed in the NCBWA Division II Top 25 poll, which was also released Wednesday evening.
The 2013 season was a memorable season for St. Thomas Aquinas, as they won the ECC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, and also set a school record with 39 wins. The 2014 looks to be a bright one for the Spartans as well, as eight All-Conference recipients return to their roster.
One of those returnees is junior outfielder, Rich Baerga (Pomona, N.Y.), who is the only student-athlete from the East Region listed on the NCBWA Preseason All-America Team. Baerga, who hit .336 with 22 RBI and 20 stolen bases a season ago, was listed as a Third Team All-American.
Baerga was also one of 10 players from the ECC to garner NCBWA Preseason All-East Region status. Joining him as First Team selections are Kenny Kirshner, Robert Frank, and C.J. Ferriggi of St. Thomas Aquinas, John Ascenzia of Bridgeport, Carlos Guzman of Molloy, and the 2013 ECC Pitcher of the Year, Tyler Badamo of Dowling.
