Major League Soccer preseason friendlies continued at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., as with a doubleheader featuring the Columbus Crew facing Sweden’s Malmö FF and Toronto FC taking on D.C. United.
In the first match, Columbus and Malmö battled to a stalemate until the 50th minute when the Crew’s Jairo Arrieta found the back of the net off a deflection. Columbus’ goalkeepers Matt Lampson and Steve Clark, battling for the starting spot, were able to fend off Malmö with a combined 10 saves on the night to preserve the clean sheet. Columbus went on to defeat the champions of Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top league, 1-0.
Shortly after, Toronto FC kicked off against D.C. United. Led by the recently signed midfielder Michael Bradley and veteran forward Dwayne Derosario, Toronto relentlessly advanced and attacked the United’s defensemen. It was all for naught until the waning minutes of the game. In the 85th minute, Toronto forward Bright Dike, with an assist from MLS rookie Kene Eze, crossed the ball past D.C. goalkeeper Chris Konopka for the score, and a 1-0 preseason win for Toronto.
The action continues on Saturday, Feb. 8 at IMG Academy Stadium when the Chicago Fire takes on D.C. United at 7:00 p.m.
