Major League Soccer preseason friendlies continued at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., with the Chicago Fire taking on D.C. United in front of a near-capacity crowd.
For Chicago, it was the first time their first teamers saw the field this preseason, and they would be tested against a hungry D.C. squad looking for a win coming off a 1-0 loss to Toronto F.C. on Wednesday. Through the first half, Chicago relentlessly assaulted D.C.’s defense, but goalkeeper Bill Hamid held strong, keeping the game knotted at zero into the half. However, Chicago rookie Harry Shipp stole the show in the second half. Shipp showed the offensive prowess that made the former Notre Dame standout the 2013 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and NCAA Tournament MVP. Shipp scored almost as soon as he hit the field in the 48th minute a follow up off the post. Later, Shipp assisted a goal by Grant Ward in the 80th minute to cap off a 2-0 victory.
The action continues on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at IMG Academy Stadium when the Chicago Fire takes on Orlando City Soccer Club at 7:00 p.m., followed by a rematch between Chicago and D.C. at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
